Lessons
Vocal and physical exercises are crucial to a singer’s foundation, especially if a student is still developing their skills. For that reason, I focus a lot of attention toward proper breathing, posture, and establishing healthy vocal technique. Especially early on, this is most effectively executed through exercises that cater to each student’s specific needs. From there I incorporate songs that are appropriate for the singer’s current level of study. Additionally, I will incorporate learning about the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA) for students learning songs in a foreign language. I believe it is important for students to know and understand the rules of diction for more accurate text pronunciation.

Student Responsibility
Beginning students will be expected to practice on a daily basis for a minimum of twenty minutes, twice per day in order to maintain basic vocal discipline. Practice time must also take into account the amount of time necessary to satisfactorily prepare repertoire assignments. Each student must responsibly assess this need and ensure that adequate time is allowed for the preparation of assigned vocal literature. Advanced students will be expected to practice for at least one hour per day.
Repertoire is ready for study in the lesson when all the musical elements, i.e. notes, rhythms, text, translation, IPA (if applicable) have been thoroughly prepared. In addition, research about the composer and poet, his/her country of origin and the period of musical history is helpful to know. At the basic level, each student should know the composer, poet and the correct title of each song they study. If the song/aria is from a larger work, it is helpful to know that as well. These are things we will discuss together in beginning lessons so that each student feels comfortable preparing their music.
