My first responsibility as a teacher is to create a safe, nurturing environment that encourages musical and personal growth.  Not only do I want my students to be confident musicians and artists, I want them to be thoughtful human beings who feel inspired to create and learn on a daily basis.  Additionally, I feel it is my responsibility to establish a solid foundation of healthy, smart singing with each student.  Since each student comes in with their own set of skills and obstacles, it is important that I remain flexible and creative in my teaching, and continue to study and learn everything I can to benefit my students.  I strive to be an advocate for my students and lead by example.  While I know each student grows at their own pace, I think it is important to encourage them to take risks and reach for what they might believe is unreachable.    

I realized as a sophomore in high school that I wanted to pursue singing.  I began my studies with Millicent Daugherty, founder of the Music Arts Institute in Independence, Missouri.  As a student of internationally praised tenor and vocal pedagogue, Richard Miller, Millicent nurtured my love of music and performing, while paying careful attention to my early technical development.  She encouraged me to continue my studies with mezzo-soprano Ann Harrell at the University of Missouri.  During our five years together, Ann helped me develop as a singer and performer. She is primarily responsible for helping me understand the importance of building a solid technique and embracing MY voice.  Upon graduating, I left Missouri for Florida, where I worked with renowned tenor, Stanford Olsen at Florida State University.  As a student of the bel canto style of singing, Stan emphasized this in his own teaching.  I continue to encourage my students to embrace this style, as it is a healthy, supported way of singing.  Most recently, I completed my studies with distinguished mezzo-soprano, Joyce Castle at the University of Kansas.  With over forty years in the business and nearly 140 roles, Joyce is a great example of a versatile performer who is dedicated to her art.  Her perseverance and optimistic outlook continue to inspire me.    

 

With each teacher, I have developed an understanding and appreciation for different concepts, styles and how the business of singing works.  They have made me a well-rounded musician and human being.  Their compassion, knowledge and willingness to share their own experiences have been crucial to my personal and professional success and growth.  These are qualities I hope to share with my own students.
